Firecracker in the eye: Boy injured and underwent surgery; policeman attacked



Two hours after Purim began a firecracker was thrown towards a boy of 15 on Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak: The boy was hit in the eye. Rescue medics gave him medical treatment, and he was taken to Tel Hashomer hospital, where he was taken into emergency surgery to try to save the damaged eye.

Kobe Haritan, a Hatzalah Dan medic, who treated the boy said: "When we arrived we were told that the boy was injured when he tried to turn on the flash, and as a result was injured in the eye due to the explosion of a firecracker. We gave him medical care at the scene, whilst fully conscious and suffering from burns to his eye. He was evacuated by MDA ambulance to Tel Hashomer hospital, where he was taken into surgery."

Yehuda Steinharter, a Hatzalah medic, said that a nephew of one of the volunteers was injured by a firecracker. "He told us that as a result of the explosive blast his eyesight was damaged, after having received initial medical treatment at the scene he was evacuated to Tel Hashomer Hospital, where he was taken into surgery in an attempt to save his vision, his name for prayer: Chaim Ben Janet Yafit."
Meanwhile, a policeman was attacked by youth, when he came to handle the event of firecrackers on Jabotinsky Street in Bnei Brak. The officer injured his hand and was slightly injured. He evacuated independently to Tel Hashomer Hospital.

Four youngsters aged 20, residents of Bnei Brak, were detained for investigation at Dan region police station.

Shortly after, a traffic accident occurred on Rabbi Abba in Bnei Brak: A pedestrian was seriously injured in the leg from a vehicle. Paramedics from Hatzalah branch of Bnei Brak gave him primary care and he was taken in fair condition to the hospital.

Police: "Firecrackers are prohibited"

Israeli police issued safety guidelines concerning costumes and Purim accessories:

Costumes: Be sure to use non-flammable materials (avoid cotton wool, feathers and sheets). Instruct your dressed up children not to approach any fire source.

Firecrackers and detonators: banned, including flares and firecrackers of all kinds (such as Tiger, bolts Carousel, bolts grinding, various explosive butterflies and various whistles), rockets, hives, nests smoke balls shooting balls fireworks.

Caps and firecrackers: Do not put caps and firecrackers in your pockets for fear of fire. Do not fire caps and the like near the ears and eyes.
Toy guns and weapons: the use of guns for firing plastic bullets is prohibited. The use of pistols and rifles and similar weapons in true form - is strictly prohibited. The use of professional bows and arrows and slingshots is prohibited in public.

Snow spray and hair spray: only buy sprays that have a check of the Standards Institute. No direct sprays to the eyes, face, body exposed or near a source of fire. These materials are very flammable.

We urge parents to be vigilant and to explain to children about the danger of using games containing explosives. Have a Happy and safe Purim.
