Policy change in organ donation promoted by Health Minister, Yael German receives backlash from her predecessor, MK Yaakov Litzmann. In a statement from the first haredi MKs, Litzman says: "This is a bizarre proposal that has no place in a democratic, equitable and ethical state"
Litzman blames and states: "There is clearly an anti-religious and outrageous coercion."
Litzman's words spoken follow reports about a law promoted by German, that every person in Israel is considered an organ donor, except those who explicitly declared refusal before his death. In addition, German has announced that she will re-examine the family's right to refuse to donate organs from the body of the deceased.
In recent years, there are shortages in Israel of those who agree to donate organs. Family rate of refusal by about 50%.
In light of the long waiting list for transplants, with no way to fulfill the demand, German decided on these measures. She says there are many who agree to contribute, but do not sign a donor card only due to lack of time and attention.
The law is not a renovation of Yael German and is implemented in France, Sweden, Spain and other countries.
