Hitorerut requires the High Court: opening 'Cinema City' on Shabbos

Hitorerut movement in Jerusalem petitioned to the High Court against the Ministry of Finance and the Municipality of Jerusalem, demanding the compound Cinema City, built in the city, and is expected to open this summer for the first time – to be open even on Shabbos.

The petition, filed by attorney Yosef Chavilio, former Attorney General of the Municipality of Jerusalem, claimed that the decision to close the site constitutes religious coercion and violates the fundamental rights of the residents of the city.

At the end of 2010, the Jerusalem City Council confirmed the report of the Finance Committee, stating that the area development 'Cinema City' to be built in Jerusalem, is approved under the condition that the activity will be in place on weekdays only.
Hitorerut movement opened a new struggle in recent months for the opening of the compound on Shabbos in order to provide the secular public with additional entertainment in the city for the weekend.

In the fight, the members of Hitorerut issues a statement on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, where they argued that in terms of the office, who first prompted the closure of the complex on Shabbos, has no objection to opening on Shabbos.

Chavilio clarified that the question of legal and constitutional principle of freedom from religion, is preventing religious coercion and the right of the secular in Jerusalem and consuming cultural services on Shabbos and holidays. They hope the filing of the petition will result in the Finance Ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality changing their decision.
