Cloak drama • Hgr"o Yosef ruled: Shas opposes to the law of Rabbi Amar
יעקב כהן

Last episode in the saga known as Amar law?

In recent years Shas leaders were given the clear teaching of Hgr"o Yosef, that there is no support in the law of Rabbi Amar. The order, delivered by Hgr"o's loyalist Zvi Chakak to MK Nissim Zeev, it was explained that despite Hgr"o's appreciation to Hgr"s Amar he cannot accept the existence of Amar –Stav deal and allow the election of Rabbi David Stav to serve as Ashkenazi Rabbi.

During the debate held at the Interior committee MK David Azoulay asked to leave since he cannot support the law by the order of Hgr"o. Other members of Shas argued with him, but the strong opposition of Hgr"o to David Stav prevailed.

Behind the Scenes we recall that in recent days there was suspicion that the Shas leadership doesn't really support the law and as declared last night by MK Moshe Gafni at the Knesset Committee saying that Shas officials sought the help of sabotaging the law."

However, MK Eli Yishai explained today upon hearing Hgr"o's order that "If the Rabbi is against a deal with Rabbi Stav - I am also against. I'm doing what the Rabbi orders." Within the Rabbi's home they were careful not to say they are against the law, Amar's law, but against the deal which it entails.

Shas also explain the resistance to the agreement reached between the Prime Minister and Minister of Religious Affairs as to the identity of the 20 alternates appointed by the electoral body assuming the Amar law goes through, according to the agreement reached this morning, 15 representatives appointed by Bennett and five by the Prime Minister. According to sources in Shas, this is a problem that could significantly change the map completely.

Technically, the law is about to transfer to the Knesset in order to obtain an exemption from the discount, but at the same time pressure is currently operated on MK Avraham Michaeli to withdraw the law.

MK Moshe Gafni responded: "The law of the deals demeans the rabbinate. There was an order of Gedolei Yisrael not to go through with the law. We made every effort with all possible parliamentary tricks, and I'm glad that the law did not occur. I think we're done with this part."
