Rosh Yeshiva Ben Ish Chai, Rabbi Menachem Edri, and his friend Yitzhak Zohar were convicted last Thursday in the Jerusalem District Court.
Story begins in 2010, when Rabbi Edery served as head of the Yeshiva where Eli Liberty a fugitive, studied. Earlier this year, Liberty was removed from the Yeshiva after another student, Sharon Zerbiv, informed him that he was involved in criminal activity. Liberty returned to the Yeshiva with intentions to hurt Sharon, and used violence against yeshiva students he encountered.
A few days after the violent incident at the Yeshiva, Rabbi Edery called Liberty and asked him to come to the Yeshiva. Liberty arrived. Edery and Rabbi Yitzhak Zohar waited for Liberty, riding a scooter, which Zohar was driving, carrying a gun.
Rabbi Edery left the scooter, Liberty said: "What are you doing?" - And pulled out the gun. Liberty started running and Rabbi Edery and Zohar chased him with the scooter, while Rabbi Edery shoots at the foot of Liberty several times.
Two bullets struck Liberty's leg and he fell to the ground. Rabbi Edery approached him, hit his head and his body with the gun, and threatened him to be careful. Zohar encouraged the Rosh Yeshiva to beat Liberty, saying, "Give him more, and give him more."
At this point Rabbi Edery contacted a bystander on the street and told him to keep away as he is a terrorist. Then, Rabbi Edery and Zohar left the place. After the incident, Rabbi Edery told Liberty on the phone not to mention the incident, threatening him and transferring to his family spent large sums of money and even testified in favor of Liberty in the criminal case going against him.
Rabbi Edery and Zohar denied the offenses attributed to them and raised an alibi claims, but these claims have been debunked.
District Court Judge Rafi Carmel, last week convicted Rabbi Edery and Zohar of the offense of conspiracy, aggravated assault, the offense of carrying a weapon, and a charge of shooting in a residential area.
