Chardakim struggle: This morning (Wednesday) was broadcast on the program 'What's the rush" of Razi Barkai a Haredi soldier, Chanan (a pseudonym) who told of the radicalization of the Haredi street attitude toward those who choose to enlist. "I call to the question of Haredi army recruiting war," said Chanan. "And when there is war, each side radicalizes his position - just as secularists do."
Chanan joined only two months ago, and he makes sure to go to his home in a neighborhood in the center of Israel only in civilian clothes after taking off his uniform in a secular neighborhood. Nevertheless, and despite the attempt to be discreet, Chanan says he was "discovered". "One day during basic training my wife called me and told me she had found a letter, which called me an Orthodox frivolous and promised to fight me from all fronts if you do not get out of the army," said Chanan, adding: "My wife was afraid to leave the house for a week, the children were afraid to go out and play in the garden."
"I had no reason not to join the army," Chanan said in an interview. "I was - a working man, so I did not learn and I had no reason to decide to give it up." According to Chanan, he is one of the few who enlisted in his neighborhood, and he says there are those that hide it so it is impossible to know exactly how many there are. "My close friends and family know I'm in the army, but not everyone accepts it. Nobody humiliates me in the face, but behind your back I know there is booing and shouting."
Chanan added that his wife supported his decision to enlist, but she did not know what she's going to go through because of it. "I'm very happy with the service, I am a battalion supporter and I'm very okay with that. Meanwhile, nothing has changed in my lifestyle - I get daily study, prayer and kosher meals."
