In an interview with Army Radio Minister Shai Piron admitted that he worked to overthrow the Amar – Ariel deal, and so for ideological reasons.
In an interview this morning (Monday), the education minister Shai Piron said: "I admit - I did everything to thwart the deal. I didn’t do it because of Rabbi Stav, but because I want people to be able to convert according to halacha, and kashrus will not turn into a business."
Meanwhile, Haaretz reported that Habayit Hayehudi accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of obstructing the deal, while the members of the coalition argued that Netanyahu announced in advance that he would object.
The party decided to withdraw the law initiated by MK Zevulun Kalfa designed to prepare the appointment of two rabbis.
A senior at the coalition yesterday rejected the allegations against Netanyahu, and said that the Prime Minister spoke with the chairman of Habayit Hayehudi Naftali Bennett already last Monday and informed him that he does not intend to promote the deal, due to the resistance of Avigdor Lieberman of personal legislation.
He noted that "Netanyahu does not issue identity preferences over chief rabbis; he does not support Ariel or oppose appointment of Rabbi Stav."
