U.S.: 91 dead and hundreds wounded in deadly tornado

A deadly tornado struck tonight (Tuesday) in the United States: At least 91 people were killed and hundreds injured in the deadly storm that hit Oklahoma City. Among the dead were also 20 children caught in a school building which collapsed.

The storm, at the intensity of 300 mph, is causing damage in a radius of 50km from Oklahoma City and the concern is that 10 additional countries neighboring Oklahoma might be hit. U.S. emergency authorities are prepared to treat hundreds of casualties, and raised fears for more deaths as a result of the power of the storm.

Residents of the city tell of rooftops flying, as well as many vehicles. At least one building caught fire and burned to the ground. The worst case occurred in an elementary school in Oklahoma City, which collapsed on its occupants as a result of the storm. Rescue crews struggled to rescue many children from the school building, but at least 20 of them were killed. Ironically, the children were left in the school building in order to save them from the storm raging outside. The storm uprooted so far at least two schools in the city, and left behind hundreds of buildings completely destroyed.

The storm was defined by the American Meteorological Services as EF4 level - one level below the highest. The intensity of the storm even managed to pull out shelter doors designed to protect citizens in just such cases. The U.S. tornado season was relatively quiet until last week, when another storm hit the city Granbury in Texas, and killed six people.
