Drama in Elad: Mayor arrested for investigation • Police raided municipality

Drama in Elad: investigators of the National Fraud Israel Police raided this morning (Sunday) the Town Hall, and detained for questioning or arrested five suspects, including Mayor Yitzhak Idan.

City employees who arrived routinely for a work day, were surprised when they saw five investigators who raided the engineering departments and city improvement, and the mayor's office while confiscating documents, computers and equipment.

At the moment the investigators' activity in the municipal building is still taking place.

Behadrey Haredim has learned that earlier in the morning investigators conducted a search at the home of the Mayor on Hameiri Street, as well as the car and home of his driver, Itzik Edri.

After the search, the mayor was arrested and taken for questioning at the Lahav unit 433. His son was detained for questioning too.

It appears, that among suspects is a known Rosh Kollel and his driver – who waa arrested. Avreichim were questioned this morning during Shachris about the location of the Rosh Kollel. His wife had also been questioned about her husband.

Elad Municipality officials said that at this hour they had no estimation what the police raid is about.

Police said: "After a long undercover investigation conducted by the Lahav 433 Fraud Squad regarding suspicion of bribery, fraud and money laundering by Elad mayor and others, this morning the unit performed open activity in cooperation with the tax authority, the IRS investigations of Jerusalem and South.

"During the activity searches were made at the Town Hall, at suspects' homes and their offices. Five suspects, including the mayor, were arrested / detained to whom offenses of giving / taking bribes, brokerage bribery, fraud and breach of trust, violations of planning and construction, theft by unauthorized and violations of Prohibition Money Laundering and Tax Ordinance have been attributed.

"In accordance with the development of the inquiry, key suspects will be brought for a hearing in their case at approx. 16:00 at the Rishon Letzion Magistrate's Court."
