Why did Rabbi of Kfar Chabad meet with the Kotler family in Lakewood?

Special meeting was held recently in Lakewood, New Jersey between Rabbi Mordechai Shmuel Ashkenazi Rabbi of Kfar Chabad, with Hagaon Rabbi Malkiel Kotler, Rosh Yeshivat Lakewood, and his family, the Chabad COL site reports.

Surprising meeting between the Lithuanian family members and rabbi of Kfar Chabad, comes as him being a grandson of rabbi of Shanghai in China, Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi zt"l.

Wife of Rabbi Shneur Kotler, son of Hgr"a Kotler zt"l, also stayed during World War II in Shanghai.

The match was made after receiving a rare blessing from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, at the intervention of Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi, who did all he could that the match will go ahead.

The special meeting was held in Lakewood, initiated by the Kotler family, and memories were brought up from the family's time in Shanghai.

It should be noted that recently a descendant of Hgr"m Ashkenazi married one of the daughters of the Kotler family.
