Fear in ultra-Orthodox communities in Brooklyn: For the fourth time since 2008, a measles epidemic broke out earlier this week, mainly spread in Borough Park.
Health Department of the Municipality of New York reported that the first incident in the last eruption originated from London. Investigation indicates that a London family member who refused to be vaccinated against measles, recently visited Brooklyn and contaminated probably more people.
So far has been received 21 notifications of measles cases in Borough Park and one in Williamsburg. Most of the infected are between the ages of 10 months to 32 years, and they recovered without the need for hospitalization, except for a few cases.
According to medical sources, the phenomenon of non vaccination against the disease is also found in non-religious families. "This is not about religion, it is likely that it is a failure in the understanding of those people what modern medicine is."
Proof of this is the fact that the percentage of those vaccinated among religious communities the same as the community members that are not religious. However, in the U.S. as well as Israel, indicates that Haredi schools they are not as strict about vaccines as other schools.
Measles outbreaks occurred in Borough Park in 2008, when there were 30 cases, in 2009, had recorded 18 cases, and in 2011, it noted 25 cases, according to the Ministry of Health of New York.
