AFP reports that German authorities arrested today (Monday) the 93-year-old Hans Lifshitz on suspicion of serving as a guard in Auschwitz during the Holocaust.
Reports stated that the man was arrested at his home and taken into custody after appearing before a judge. Doctor who examined him stated that his health allows him to remain in custody.
He is suspected of being an accomplice.
German prosecutors claim that it has "compelling evidence" that he was involved in crimes of genocide prisoners under guard in the camp between 1942 and 1945.
1.5 million people died in Auschwitz in four years when he was active.
Lifshitz admitted he served in the SS, but argues that he only served as a cook. He fled to the United States in the past, and was expelled from there in 1983, after which he lied about his Nazi past.
Court in Munich, Germany, opened today the trial of five Neo - Nazis defendants publicly exposed the first time since arrested a year ago. Police set up roadblocks in the security section defendants, for fear relatives of Holocaust victims would try to harm them.
