New York • 5 years prison to synagogue bombing planner

Mohamed Mamdouh, 21-year-old American citizen of Moroccan origin, was sentenced on Friday in a Manhattan court to 5 years in prison after being convicted of intention to blow up synagogues in the city.

His partner in crime, Ahmad Farahani, 27-year-old Algerian citizen, was sent last month to 10 years in prison.

Farahani who is serving his sentence in prison planned to disguise himself as a Jew, so he could infiltrate a synagogue without arousing suspicion and leave a bomb inside. "In synagogue attacks I meant to create chaos, to send a message of intimidation and threats against the Jewish community in New York, and warn them against abuse of Muslims," said Farahani in court six months ago.

Along with Farahani, was also arrested at the time, Mohammed Mamdouh who was sentenced on Friday.

The too were accused in a rare case of violating the local law passed shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Farahani has been arrested before, in 2011, while trying to obtain dangerous weapons.
