Will Mea Shearim become a tourist attraction? The newspaper Ma'ariv reported that the Jerusalem municipality plans tours in the haredi neighborhoods in Jerusalem, Mea Shearim, Geula, Bukharan Quarter and more.

The tours, which are called as "Back to Heritage", will take tourists on a tour of neighborhoods, during which they will learn about their heritage and historical figures which lived in them.

The program is an initiative of the community administration Geula-Bucharim and is expected to gain the approval of the Finance Committee of the City Hall next week.

According to the program's organizers, these neighborhoods are of a rich history which holds inside stories about Israel and the Diaspora communities and the first Jewish settlement in Jerusalem.

The plan states that "in these neighborhoods many significant figures were active in the Jewish history in Israel." They said neighborhood residents will benefit from the program because 'they will be employed in hosting tourists at home, will tell a personal story, will hold art workshops, and more. "

Some neighborhood residents oppose the plan: "The neighborhood is simply too closed," said a resident to Ma'ariv.

Extremists in the neighborhood said: "The Haredi public not willing to learn the Zionist past. The program may expose our public to impurity, from which the rabbis have always tried to hide. It will not pass."
