Satmar Independence Day customs: "Say Tachnun, even if there is a Bris"
Satmar see Independence Day as a day of mourning which was announced as "rebel against kingdom of heaven" • "A man who comes to a shul and sees they don’t say Tachnun, will view it as an act of identification"
- Shlomo Greenberg, B'Chadrei Charedim

Prevailing orthodox approach does not consider Israel's Independence Day as a holiday, but also does not mention it as a day of mourning. Neturei Karta and Satmar, however, closed their shops in protest on the day stated on the 'rebellion in the Kingdom of Heaven", as they put it. Some even tend to fast on this day to express the pain of the Zionist disaster.
In an ad published in the Beis Medrash of the Borough Park neighborhood, the public is called to say Tachnun on Monday (5th Iyar, the establishment of the State and not today 6th of Iyar, which Israel celebrates in practice this year), even if there is a Bris, sandek or mohel in the shul, which according to Jewish law prevents the public from reciting Tachnun, as a sign of joy. This is according to the orders of the Rebbe the Divrei Yoel of Satmar, that one must rule out the thought that might come up in the mind of a person, who is caught up in a chassidish shul, and if he sees that they do not say Tachnun, should view it as due to identification with Independence Day and expressing solidarity with joy upon its establishment.
In an ad published: "We hereby remind the public and members of the Beis Medrash the orders of our community, made by the founder of our community Maran Rabbeinu Divrei Yoel ztvk"l, on Monday Parshas Tazria when the bitter day 5th of Iyar falls, when our enemies came and violated Eretz Hakodesh by establishing an impure State and betrayed G-d and His Torah."
In large letters it was written: One say Tachnun in every minyan and even in a minyan which includes a Bris, mohel or sandek. And may Hashem help that we should merit the rebuilding of Zion and Yerushalayim and glorify Hashem's name."
