In an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, which will be published on Independence Day, the Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron breaks the silence and talks about his plans for the Ministry of Education. In an interview he revealed that he intends to deprive budgets from Haredi institutions that do not teach the core subjects - English and mathematics.
According to the minister's plan, Haredi students will learn subjects like math and English in the afternoon in special learning centers. "The haredi educational institutions will have to choose between two alternatives - core curriculum, or waiving their integration in educational content - what will entail their denial of budgets," he says. "You want money from the state? Core studies are the condition of the country. If you're not with me, I take the money."
He said that although these are private institutions which the Ministry of Education can not force what to teach, but there is no reason that his office should fund them. "The state can not pay for something that is contrary to its interests."
The education minister further declared his intention to conduct negotiations with all parties of the Haredi education systems, before denying budgets. "I want to reach an agreement on the core curriculum. As long as the the discourse is relevant, and want to hold it. When I feel the discourse is an end and not a means – I will not be in this story. The goal is to reach an agreement - if we do not reach it, we are heading for a struggle which is not easy. Institutions which will teach the core curriculum shall be provided with one hundred percent funding. Those who do not – will be harmed. "
In the interview, the Education Minister also clarified that the trip of students in schools to Hebron sponsored by the Ministry of Education will cease, and that each year a new destination will be elected.
Ariel attacks: it is clear to all which public will suffer
Will the interview in question for the first crack in the coalition against the Jewish Home? This morning, in his Facebook page, the Minister of Housing, Uri Ariel, wrote the following:
"This morning I read an interview with the Minister Piron and his announcement that he intends not to transfer funds to institutions that do not teach core curriculum. It is clear to all which public will suffer.
"This is an unnecessary decision, that in my opinion will not stand the test of the Supreme Court. Already there is a difference between the state's funding of institutions which teach the core studies and those that do not. There is no need to continue the damage.
"Even if we think that the haredi public has to make a change, one has to do so in cooperation. Such a decision will achieve the opposite result."
