After the burning of eleven mezuzahs in Williamsburg, yesterday (Tuesday) another Mezuzah was ignited in the haredi suburb of New York.
In a building next to the building where the previous ignition occurred, a haredi tenant noticed that the mezuzah on his doorpost was burned. The tennant rushed to call the police and leaders of Hashomrim.
The police arrived with reinforcements, but did nothing. The owner of the burned mezuzah relates: "This is not the first time it happens to me. Last year I had the same thing, then I also called the police, and even said I know who did it, a young non-Jewish woman neighbor who lives on the floor below. Police collected evidence, recorded a complaint but said it would not be able to arrest the non Jewish neighbor because I have no evidence that she performed the act. Then I hung up a new mezuzah, but a day later it was again vandalized. "
"I went to my rabbi and asked his advice, the Rav suggested that I put the mezuzah inside the house. A few months ago my wife became ill and I again approached the Rav regarding the mezuzah, the Rav told me to try again to hang the mezuzah outside, but again the mezuzah was damaged. Yesterday evening I heard screams coming from the stairway, I live on the 13th floor. I went to the stairwell and found my mezuzah scorched, and I heard a woman - the mother of the non-Jewish neighbor, screaming at her daughter and asking her if anyone saw her? "
"A haredi neighbor who lives on the floor of the young gentile said that the young woman walks around the nearby building where 11 mezuzos were burned the day before," relates the man in whose home a mezuzah was set on fire, asking to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from his gentile neighbor.
The police say that it holds a security camera film showing a young white man in his 20's wearing a purple bandana on his head and a black jacket, with the word New York on his shoulder, passing in the hall at the time of the burning of the mezuzahs.
Haredi City Councilman David Greenfield promised a reward of 4000 dollars, with the assistance of activist Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Friedman, to whoever will bring to the capture of the mezuzah igniter.
Bill de Bliso, Commissioner of Complaints for New York municipality , said at a press conference held at the place, that the police and the authorities will do everything to find the sickly culprit who burned the mezuzahs.
