Great excitement prevailed on Monday in Krias HaTorah at the Chabad Center in Crown Heights: Menachem Mendel Hanaiov, the child who was severely injured in a car accident three days before the Bar Mitzvah, arrived for Shachris bandaged and sitting in a wheelchair.
His father, Shmuel Hanayov told of miracles discovered since the horrific accident, "My son Menachem Mendel went on Friday to the mikveh which is in front of Chabad Center on Eastern Far Rockaway. On his way back he cross the road and a car of one of our people did not notice him, and hit him. The child was thrown and hit hard. Hatzala volunteers who were at that time in the shull across the street rushed to give him medical help and transfer him, when he was sedated and on respirator to the "Kings County" hospital in the area. I was called and when I arrived I called Menachem Mendel, and he opened his eyes. "
"His condition was severe, doctors feared bleeding in the brain, his arm and shoulder were crushed there was fear of bleeding in the stomach. Necessary examinations were conducted and indicated damage to the shoulder and hand and little bleeding in the head. In a consultation with medical officials they decided to tranfer him, as he is, to a hospital in Manhattan. When we got to the hospital additional tests were done, and they decided to operate the hand by emergency surgery, but there was still fear of the bleeding in his head. After consultations it was decided to conduct the surgery on a Friday night. The surgery went well and the bleeding in his head was found to be very small. On Sunday night, 12 hours before the bar mitzvah, the doctors allowed Menachem Mendel togo home, to show up the next day at Shachris and go up to the Torah and then return to the hospital for further treatment. "
"On Monday morning," the Rav continued, "Menachem Mendel took pain killers, and in a wheelchair we managed B"H to get to the aliyah la'Torah. Menachem Mendel even managed to stand for a minute when called to the Torah, while overcoming his suffering. After the service we went back to the hospital.
"The seudas mitzvah which was planned for Monday evening was postponed to a later date," the father excitedly relates and asks the public to continue to daven for Menachem Mendel ben Nechama for Refuah Sheleima.
