In the past year, three cases of herpes amongst circumcised in Israel

Of about 60 thousand circumcisions performed in Israel in 2012, there were three cases of herpes among circumcised, though it is unclear whether these cases became infected from the mohel, announced today (Monday) the Chief Rabbinate following cases of infants in New York infected as a result of the mouth sucking procedure during circumcision.

State Unions Committee, Joint Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Ministry of Health, today clarified that the use of a tube during circumcision is originally permitted halachically and medically advisable.

"Using this tube significantly reduces the chances of contracting herpes," they said.

Chief Rabbinate procedures state that if the parents of circumcised wish not to use the tube, the mohel explain the risks. The right of parents is to make sure before the bris that the mohel is using a tube.

Covenants Committee emphasizes that the complication rate of circumcision in general and in particular herpes is zero, and statistically circumcision is an extremely safe procedure in the general surgical procedures.
