Former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, known as the 'Iron Lady' died today (Monday), age 87. Bureau spokesman said: "Baroness Thatcher died this morning following a stroke." He said Thatcher's children, Mark and Carol, wanted to note that "their mother died peacefully."

Thatcher served as the first woman prime minister in the UK from 1990-1979, after leading the Conservative landslide election. It was the longest tenure of a British prime minister since the early 19th century.

Thatcher was born on October 13, 1925 and named Margaret Hilda Roberts in the Lincolnshire region. Her father was a grocer. She studied at Oxford University on a scholarship and received two degrees - chemistry and lawyer. In 1951, she married the wealthy businessman Denis Thatcher, and they had two children. Thatcher discovered interest in politics which brought her to Parliament at the age of 34 as a member of the Conservative party. She quickly climbed the ranks of the party, and at age 44 she was appointed Minister of Education.

Thatcher was admitted in recent years due to pneumonia, and broke her leg and hand several times. Her daughter was interviewed by the media four years ago following a book she wrote and said that her mother also has difficulty identifying family. However, she said when my mother remembers her time at 10 Downing Street, "Memory and Mother comes back again."

Thatcher suffered in recent years from fragile health and rarely left her home. At the end of 2011 Thatcher appeared in public when she went out for dinner on the occasion of her 86th birthday. Thatcher, who was leader of the Conservative Party for many years, was wearing a blue dress and a blue jacket - the color identified in the House with party members.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said: "We have lost a great leader and a great British personality." Britain's Queen Elizabeth expressed sorrow over the death of Thatcher, and announced that she shall express her condolences to the family privately.
