Wth the start of Day of Holocaust Remembrance, some 200 young yeshiva students and young Haredi women, went out to Sacher Park in Jerusalem to a joint barbecue. "It is for the Iluy neshomo of those who perished in the Holocaust," some of them responded defiantly when asked for their actions.
The newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reports this morning (Monday) that the group came from Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh, and its members brought coolers with different types of meat "and a lot of good mood." One of them said: "We do not do what you ask us. We remember the Holocaust survivors more than you and more than any other secular. We just honor their memory our own way."
Another participant snapped: "What do they want from us? You travel on Shabbos, you do not fast on the Fast of Gedaliah. Do you know what is the Fast of Gedaliah at all?"
There were others at the park who did not realize what was wrong with a barbecue on the night of the Day of Holocaust Remembrance. When the newspaper staff approached another group, one of them commented: "I am the grandson of a Holocaust survivor who is still alive. It is you secularists who do not respect the dead. We read Tehillim for them tomorrow morning and study for their souls, and you, what do you do? Say a few nice words and sound the siren?"
"Besides," he added, "today we are on vacation and came to rest."
