Meat storm: Ministry of Agriculture researching kashrus scam

Meat storm in Los Angeles: service department officials and the Ministry of Agriculture Food Safety of the State of California have confirmed that an investigation against the company Doheny, marketed meat to supermarkets and shops in California and elsewhere, on suspicion they marketed treif meat under fake kosher stamps.

The owner, Michael Engleman, is facing charges of fraud, by selling meat that was not under the conditions given to it.

The investigation itself was conducted under a veil of secrecy. Private investigator who video recorded evidence that the meat products sold –were rewrapped in special packaging, met last week with officials from the Ministry and handed over his materials.

Researcher revealed that the independent investigation conducted began seven months ago, when a local rabbi of the community turned to him. According to him, the rabbi told him that some members of the community are concerned that the store offers meat for sale at a discount more than normal.

Researcher began to examine the claim, and found that store employees collect empty meat packaging labeled 'kosher' from the wastebaskets in other restaurants.

As for rumors that Michael Engelmann's competitors are behind the investigation - said the researcher: "how can someone coordinate all this? After all, they did what they did. No one hired me. No one paid me." He added sarcastically: "If someone wants to give me donations, I'll be happy if they send them to me".

Rabbinical Council of California removed before Passover, the kashrus from the network. At the same time, the Council suspended the supervisor who worked at video photography, and she said that they will investigate further evidence against the meat store.

Meanwhile, the published testimony of former council chairman, Rabbi Pinchas Grumman, told that this is not the first time complaints come against Doheny owner, Michael Engelmann.
