Five months after 'Sandy': 2000 still without home

Five months have passed since the storm 'Sandy' washed over New York - and hundreds of families are still without a home: Figures published this week in The New York Times found that more than 2,000 people whose homes were damaged in the storm were left without housing.

According to the data, these 900 households, staying in hotels with an average cost of 252 dollars per night.

Municipal department officials said that these people do not have the financial ability to hold an empty apartment. These families also struggled to get assistance from support programs established soon after the disaster or social service groups.

The families are scattered in 45 different hotels around the city. The municipality explained that "The hotels provided flexibility and availability that was not attainable through other solutions."

On the other hand, social factors criticized those responsible for the families staying in hotels. "Why pay such large amounts instead of paying rent for those families whose lives will be conducted as a regular family?"
