After many years: McDonalds in Beit Shemesh, became this week a Shabbos observant branch and received a kosher certificate.
B'Chadrei Charedim learned that the transformation occurred under an agreement signed between Yehuda Naftali, the owner of the trade center, 'Big two', and Omri Padan, franchise food chain in Israel.
11 years ago franchisee network in Israel, Omri Padan, announced the opening of a branch of McDonald's in the shopping 'Big one' center in Beit Shemesh. Rabbis and Orthodox public figures, including former deputy mayor, Moshe Abutbul, who serves as mayor today, went out on a fight against the business.
The rabbis called to protest against the branch and held Friday prayers in front of the store. Dozens went out to the shopping center, and protested against the opening of the branch.
But the ultra-Orthodox struggle failed. The Israeli franchisee refused to close the store while he explains that he "opposes religious coercion." He also said that he will not "hurt the feelings of the secular residents in the city."
But this week, with the opening of the shopping center 'Big two' reality changed: The branch in 'Big one' was closed and replaced by a branch in 'Big two' with a commitment to preserve the sanctity of Shabbos and kashrut. These items were introduced as a condition for renewal of the lease agreement between the Big Company and the McDonald's food chain.
In return, the Food Network received unique financial benefits and thus the only restaurant that desecrated Shabbos - closed. It was also discovered that the best man of the agreement is the mayor, Moshe Abutbul who asked to "congratulate heartily the Big network owners who did above and beyond for the honor of Shabbos." He added that today he was able to "remove the shame and bring to Beit Shemesh a cleaner and puree environment. I heard from Gedolei Yisrael that there is no doubt that closing the only place which desecrated Shabbos in the city, removed the accusations over the city and its residents."
