First Introduction: The following lines are written out a lot of pain and not out of a desire to attack again. So too, they have no bit, in the crime of the leaders of Habayit Hayehudi, who connected to Lapid the enemy of the state's Jewish identity, while banning the orthodox parties.
For more than 30 years (!) My friends and I joined the charedi public whenever there was an important battle on the principles of our religion and state issues. Shabbos, modesty, education, obscene parades, threatening the integrity of Jerusalem and Jewish life character issues – we will always fight shoulder to shoulder with the Orthodox.
I remember how the late Rabbi Menachem Porush, who was head of the systems, he recruited, organized, initiated and commanded and I was always to his service.
This time too, immediately after the election when I realized where the wind blows, I made contact with the leaders of the charedi public in the hope to create the front and establish a common struggle to save the yeshiva students. Unfortunately I found no one to talk to.
Besides for gibberish media interviews, the Knesset members and their assistants, there is no orderly staff which runs the battlefield. There is no budget campaign, no strategy, no PR. Everything is built on the readies. Every day they change tactics and direction.
Once they invite the MK's of Habayit Hayehudi for a yeshiva tour, and the next day they announce the boycott of products made in settlements beyond the Green Line (like anti-Semitism in Europe) in which there are more voters of Yahadut Hatorah and Shas then Habayit Hayehudi (it's been checked!)
Gentlemen, that’s not how to win a fight!
Today more than ever the lack of Rabbi Menachem Porush is noticeable, who each time there was a struggle of this size, he was one of the forces on a wide front, withdrawing all - anyone who can and is willing to help. He had developed an impassioned speech about the problem and its implications, with the pathos that was just for him.
Immediately after, he would go down into the analysis and distribution of tasks and roles. Each day, the members would gather to report what had progressed in each sector.
Betrayals: step by step
But what about the important issue to me and my friends, and the protection of Torah scholars and members of the yeshivas?
For many years the problem of the legal status of the yeshiva students is rushing towards us. Supreme Court has spoken a number of times, the media and the charedi haters increased incitement for several months now. It was to be expected gentlemen. It is not a surprise! But here are the results to us.
Now step by step:
The one who canceled the Tal Law was the High Court not the Knesset!
What did the ultra-Orthodox MKs do to weaken the Supreme Court – before they reached out and canceled the law?
Amazing to say: not only did the ultra-Orthodox MKs do nothing against the High Court, they also betrayed us, and sabotaged efforts to weaken the Supreme Court!
A puzzling thing which raises difficult questions, charedi delegates operated in the Knesset for the Supreme Court and against the attempt to change the composition of the committee to select judges, which would have restrained the power of the Supreme Court judges. Had they cooperated with us and supported the weakening of the power of the High Court to overturn laws, we would not stand today against the cancelled Tal Law! This was the first betrayal against us, and in the Torah.
And so on to the next step.
After the law was cancelled, they should have looked for allies to fight together, shoulder to shoulder against any attempt to harm the Yeshivas. But it was not done.
Moreover, it is time to reveal that there were politicians and leaders from the chardali community who offered help at the beginning of the struggle, but they were rejected with contempt. Chardali Rabbis, who wanted to coordinate the struggle with the Orthodox, were rejected.
It was a continuation of the conduct of crude, narrow vision and malevolent, in which they did not recognize thanks to those who helped charedim for a generation. When charedi activists were in key positions Jerusalem Municipality and the government, they ran over roughly this population and didn’t even leave them with crumbs, and hit the Rabbinical and Talmudic scholars.
However, these condoned their dignity and offered help. But the ultra-Orthodox Knesset members did not want to coordinate and cooperate, in any way. This was the second betrayal.
And the next step:
During the election charedi MKs (and one in particular), made every effort to find the dividing and not the uniting, whilst using lies, slander and rumpled, in an attempt to bring the faithful of Israel, to support Yahadut Hatorah, and not us, God forbid; we who voted throughout the candidacy automatically with the Orthodox, but again with shortsightedness betrayed our absolute trust to the Orthodox parties. Yes, this is the third betrayal.
There is no doubt that if we would have received those few thousands of individual votes we lacked, even at the expense of Yahadut Hatorah, Yahadut Hatorah's situation itself would be completely different. Even if they themselves had one less mandate in the Knesset seats, we would have added to the power which has always been defined as the sixth Orthodox finger. There is doubt that Habayit Hayehudi would have found it difficult to deal with a national religious party in the Knesset, which is on a par with the Orthodox.
Rabbi Menachem where are you?
Today: what is expected of the Orthodox political leadership, against the dangerous tsunami? Against falling into the abyss?
Not too late, before falling into a hopeless civil war, we must wake up and prepare an organized campaign. Establish a headquarter which will coordinate the campaign, expand the Basic Support for he Torah world, proving the contribution of the ultra-Orthodox to the state, demonstrate that there is no desire - ability - and the need for charedim in the army. We are required to establish an information campaign of opinion makers and the public and establish real political alliances. Certainly not to send away whole communities, without thinking and without planning.
Functionaries must affect the harsh reality and not tag along. In practice, however, nothing was done.
Today more than ever, I feel the loss of the late Rabbi Menachem Porush, I miss the character of the man who loved the land of Israel and loved the State of Israel. He knew the secret of success of unified powers.
It would be good if the charedi activists and his followers in particular, would learn from his actions and implement them in favor of charedi Judaism and the Torah world.
Rabbi Menachem, where are you?
