A combat helicopter accident led to the death of two pilots: Tonight (Tuesday) a combat helicopter, Viper (Cobra), crashed while in a training flight in the Judean Lowland.
At around 01:00 am contact was lost with the helicopter, which was on its way back to the Palmachim base from a training sortie. Extensive search and rescue forces including helicopters, UAV (un-manned aircraft) and ground forces were rushed to the area and began searching.
At around 5:15 the remains of the helicopter were located. There were no survivors. Identifying actions are being carried out.
The disappearance was detected one hour after midnight, when a preliminary report was received on the radar of a combat helicopter which disappeared in Kibbutz Chafetz Chaim are, which was on its way back to land at the Palmahim base. The pilots did not report a problem.
Following the report, a large force of the IDF, Magen David Adom, fire, Zaka and Ichud Hatzala with the help of helicopters of the Air Force, scanned the entire Southern region, especially in the area Chafetz Chaim, Revidim, Gedera - Kidron, until the remains of the helicopter were identified in a wheat field, near the entrance of Kibbutz Revidim, leading to the location of the helicopter and pilots z"l.
The IDF spokesman said that since the helicopter was on its way back from a workout, it did not carry a large amount of fuel and therefore did not explode in the air, but crashed and dismantled after the fall.
The Air Force Commander, Gen. Amir Eshel, ordered the establishment of an army commission of inquiry. In addition, the Corps Commander instructed the grounding of the Air Viper system, to determine the circumstances of the accident.
Notice was given to the families of the deceased.
In his Facebook page, IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Yoav (Poly) Mordechai, shared his feelings: "A little after midnight, my cell phone rang. It was the chief aide with the news about the crash of a Cobra helicopter, during a training flight.
"The heart and mind wandered from that moment to the families who are about to receive the news.
"Along with investigating the circumstances and the initial research process, I have a harsh feeling and great sadness at the untimely passing of two of our experienced and veteran air crew."
