Charges in shooting case at Shuvu Banim: "Rabbi Berland said break his bones"

Jerusalem District Attorney's Office, by Mr. Shmuel Barzilai, filed today (Tuesday) in the District Court an indictment against Itai Nachman Shalom, Aaron Yaakov Richter and David Avraham Shemtov, 18, 27 and 19 respectively, who live in Jerusalem and Be'er Yaakov.

The three are accused of offenses including possession of weapons, shooting in urban and assault and aggravated injury.

The indictment tells the story in full, according to the narrative: the defendants Richter and Shemtov belong to Shuvu Banim, headed by Rabbi Eliezer Berland. Shalom belonged to this community, but pulled away in the face of allegations raised about the rabbi's misconduct in modesty.

According to the indictment quoted before the events described below, Rabbi Berland said to Richter and Shemtov to hit Shalom and break his bones.

At the end of Shevat, Richter and Shemtov threw Shalom on the road near the Nechama bakery in the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem, beat him and slapped him.

Night of the attack:

Friday night – 5th Adar, at about 2:00, Shalom remained in the synagogue 'the shul' in Mea Shearim. Shemtov came up, and asked him to come out and help him find a place to sleep.

Shalom went out, was then attacked by Richter and Shemtov who kicked and punched him, until people came to marginalize them away. As a result of their actions, Shalom needed for medical treatment, where there were four stitches in his head.

Later, Shalom called his brother, Rami, and asked him to bring his weapon. Then, Shalom met with Rami, Nati (another brother) and another man whose identity is not known.

At about 4:00 in the morning, Shalom came with his brother - Rami and Nati to the Richter family apartment, they kicked the door and fled. At around 5:00, they went back to the scene, carrying a 9 mm handgun and shot at the door of the apartment three shots. One of the shots penetrated the door.

The above are accused of bearing arms, shooting in an urban area, aggravated assault and aggravated injury.

The Accused, Itai Nachman Shalom, Aaron Yaakov Richter and David Avraham Shemtov, will stay under full house arrest in their homes in Jerusalem and Be'er Yaakov supervised by their families for two months.

Each one will deposit 3000 NIS, bail of 10,000 shekels, and a guarantee of any of the regulatory bodies for the amount of NIS 10,000 more.
