Plague of Egypt: 'Locust alert' was declared in Israel

In light of swarms of locusts which attacked Egypt, Israeli Ministry of Agriculture declared a 'locusts alert'

According to Egyptian sources this morning (Monday) locusts will come swarming into the Gaza Strip and Israel within 48 hours. Assessment came during a special session held by experts at the Ministry of Agriculture in Sinai.

Services Plant Protection and Inspection Ministry of Agriculture received notification of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), of the presence of swarms of locusts in Cairo, Egypt. Because of the winds and climatic conditions prevailing in the region, there is a chance for the arrival of the locusts to Israel. Spring Season is the season of reproduction of the barge, and therefore there is a greater risk during this period.

Director of Plant Protection Services and Inspection Ministry of Agriculture, Miriam Freund, said: "All the relevant areas with expected entry of locusts Israel received an update, and are in locusts alert. Israel's array of pesticides by air and ground, are ready to act if and when we need it. Services Plant Protection and Inspection Ministry of Agriculture are permanently in contact with the organization - FAO, whose job is tracking and reporting on an ongoing basis barge movement in northern Africa and eastward to India."

In practice "locust alert", while preparations start from the ground teams and aerial pesticide, the Ministry of Agriculture contacted the import companies that produce pesticides to make sure there is a sufficient supply of eradication of harmful pesticides. 'Locusts alert' team, are even going through training and exercises each year, regardless of the alert.

Some facts about the locusts and the damage it causes:
All locusts eat food on the equivalent weight.

Number of adults can range from 40 to 80 million in each swarm in each kilometer in the area.

One ton of locusts (a small part of the swarm) eat food as 2,500 people.
Widespread distribution of locusts, nearly 30 million square kilometers in 60 countries.
