The haredi public refused to believe that the state will recruit the yeshiva students to the IDF, "If they go into jail, we'll go along with them," they repeated the saying of Gedolei Yisroel since the Tal Law has expired.
Complaints which arrived over the last days to Behadrey Haredim reveal that the IDF sent warrants to yeshiva students following non-cooperation with the induction centers.
An investigation conducted by Behadrey Haredim shows that at least five boys studying in Jerusalem and other areas have recently received a letter, in which they were given notice of an arrest warrant against them. It is estimated that there are other boys, and all have one common denominator: lack of cooperation with the induction centers.
The letters received by the boys are signed by commanders or their deputies. "Since you did not report at the recruitment centers ... for the sake of completing the proceedings you were required to perform for your recruit, an arrest warrant against you has been issued, to be executed by the Israeli police," they read.
"Given your lack of reporting to the recruitment offices as required, and issuing an arrest warrant against you, we wish to inform you that you may not leave Israel without a special personal permit from the recruiting office. Your leaving Israel without a permit as stated - is a criminal offense and you are prone to stand trial for it."
Finally it says: "This is the last opportunity you are given to settle your position. If you do not report, you will get a draft notice under Section 12 of the Security Service Law which allows your draft even if you have not finished the proceedings in the centers."
The meaning of the arrest warrants is that the police can stop the bochur at any given moment. One member of the family of a boy who received the order said to Behadrey Haredim: "We believe it will not reach a stage where they will draft by force, but it causes a big fear especially among the parents of the boy, given the fact that they could recruit him."
It was also learned that last week the military police arrived at the Mir Yeshiva boys' apartment and arrested a yeshiva boy with Israeli citizenship who also holds U.S. citizenship. According to the testimony of the boys at the yeshiva: "The boy was arrested and taken to a military prison and was released after 24 hours." As to whether he was released after committing to enlist, the boys did not know.
Meanwhile, the Movement for Quality Government turned today (Wednesday) the Minister of Defense, the Attorney General and Judge Advocate in an appeal to enforce the law against boys who do not cooperate with the induction centers, "just before a procedure becomes an overwhelming phenomenon which gets the support of certain community leaders, we urge all concerned to act for the enforcement and implementation of the Defense Service Law for all, and to exhaust all legal tools available to the defense system in order to accommodate large numbers of conscripts. "
