Beit Midrash Kehal Yeraim members in Seagate, Brooklyn, were shocked on Shabbos morning to find that all the prayer shawls in the synagogue - including a prayer shawl of the neighborhood Rabbi – were gone.
Quick search across the Beit Midrash found the prayer shawls in the 'treasure room' of the shul, but the precious silver crowns were stolen from all of them. Apparently a burglary took place on Friday night, during which the burglars took the crowns and threw the tattered prayer shawls in the 'treasure room'.
Police were called to the scene after Shabbos. The police took testimony and findings and promised to find the thieves.
Nechemiah Reichenbach, who davened at the shul on Shabbos, told B'Chadrei Charedim, that the damage totals tens of thousands of dollars. According to him, the price of silver crown begins at three thousand dollars, and can reach up to ten thousand dollars - it all depends on the type of coronal and weight put into it.
Reichenbach notes that the rabbi's stolen crown was very expensive, not only because of monetary value.
Note that the price of silver increased recently in the U.S., and is followed by robberies of crowns which has become a widespread phenomenon in the ultra-Orthodox communities.
