42 thousand sites of the Nazi killing machine operated in Europe - according to a new study by the United Nations and finds that the amount and extent of the extermination program was enormous magnitude, far more than was customary so far.
The newspaper "New York Times", reporting on the presentation given to the German History Research Forum, described the reaction of academic experts:" The numbers are much higher than we originally thought, "said Hartmoth Berghoff, Director of the German Institute."We knew that life in the camps and ghettos were horrible, but it is astounding."
According to the paper, the Holocaust experts check again and again if these data are accurate.
The experts themselves could not believe the results found. Assumption oriented them in the first place was that they will find 7000 sites, compared with 42,000 found in practice. "These sites blackened large areas of Europe during the war, black clusters of death, torture and slavery."
The study examined ghettos, camps, labor and concentration camps which were active between 1933 and 1945 (תרצ"ג-תש"ה). Results of the research concentrated all sites from 400 different sources, their exact locations, through their management and their purpose.
