Supreme Court in Auckland – New Zealand, ruled today (Thursday) a sentence of 320 hours of community service in Jewish cemeteries in New Zealand, against a young man who destroyed twenty gravestones in a Jewish cemetery in the state a few months ago.
Four months ago in New Zealand three young men aged 19-23 were arrested, after conducting a pogrom against the local Jewish cemetery. The rioters destroyed monuments and painted graffiti and swastikas.
This week was the trial of the three young men - now released to house arrest. One of the men confessed and expressed remorse for his actions, the judge took into account the remorse and the pace of the sentence to 320 hours of community service in the Jewish cemetery.
During service work the young man will be forced to clean Jewish gravestones, pulling thistles among the gravestones and other necessary maintenance work at the site.
Auckland city's Jewish community expressed satisfaction with the sentence, and they believe that the educational punishment will deter others youngsters from committing acts alike.
