Hgray"l on recruiting: "there will be no compromise"

Publications on different characters to equal burden, while spreading rumors that Gedolei Yisrael would agree to compromise on the design of some sort, are breaking this morning in light of Hgray"l Steinman's letter, published in the headline of the newspaper Yated Ne'eman. In the letter, meant to inform of the initiative to hold mass prayers on Taanis Esther to annul the recruitment decree, Hgray"l explains that "there is no compromise."

Briefly and succinctly Hgray"l explains the main method and expressed opposition to any order of recruitment of service. "All that remains is the Torah and its students," he wrote, "and of course it's hard to begin to learn at an older age, and those starting from a young age are successful, at this age one can better understand the Torah. These years are those that determine the life for each boy."

These reasons led to, that 'throughout the generations everything possible was done to remove the obstruction from Torah learning, so that they can study to a degree of knowing and understanding the Torah."

Besides, Hgray"l notes another reason which does not allow recruitment of yeshivas, regardless of Torah study: "Just being in the army is great spiritual dangers Hashem should have mercy, it's just the opposite of what we teach our sons."

Further on in the ketter Hgray"l calls to hold on Thursday, Taanis Esther, mass prayers in the shuls and Batei Midrash of the children and their parents "and say Tehillim to annul the decree above us."

In this letter Hgray"l does not specify the claim that Torah study protects Eretz Yisrael as does the military service.

Hgray"l's initiative to hold mass prayers of Tinokot Shel Bet Raban and parents on Taanis Esther, came after an initiative attempted by Ger chasidim – to promote a huge rally in New York "to rise up and defend themselves" against the draft decree on Purim - with the Gerrer Rebbe and Gedolei Yisrael with other Rebbes, failed. This came after there were no other Rebbes who agreed to fly to New York and not spend Purim with their chassidim in Eretz Hakodesh.
