Fifth of couples in Israel choose: not to marry at the Rabbinate

CBS continues to submit data with actual meaning: more than 16% of couples choose not to marry at the rabbinate in Israel and travel to other countries.

The data published yesterday, and refer to 2010. Two out of five married couples could get married abroad could do so at the rabbinate, yet chose not to do so.

Some couples explained that they do not want to deal with unnecessary bureaucracy from the Chief Rabbinate. Other couples could not marry in the rabbinate, because one partner is not Jewish, or for other reasons.

CBS estimates that, according to the current upward trend it seems that in ten years the number of couples who will not marry through the Rabbinate is 13,000, an increase of 40%.

Country for which most couples choose to marry is to travel to the United States (22%), followed by Cyprus (17%) and a similar percentage of married couples in Russia and the CIS. Other popular countries these couples travel to are the Czech Republic, France, England and Australia.
