Conflict in Shuvu Banim: Shooting in Mea Shearim

On Thursday night shots were heard from Edmond Street in the neighborhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem. At first people thought that the kids were playing with Purim firecrackers. But police forces that streamed to the area made clear: this is indeed a shooting incident.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 in the morning. A man stood at the door of a private home, fired several bullets at the door - and escaped. There were no injuries from the shooting. Large police forces were called to the scene and opened investigation into the incident.

On Friday night a suspect about 30 was arrested, who was with his mother in Eilat. On Motzei Shabbos he was brought to the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, where his detention was extended until Tuesday.

Today (Sunday), his father was also arrested, and he was questioned on suspicion of involvement in his son's acts.

Investigation of the case indicates that the rolling conflict is between different factions in Shuvu Banim, due to modesty. Earlier on Thursday night, at about 2:00 at night, a violent fight broke out outside the shul in Mea Shearim, in which a young man was beaten, about 30, who studies at the Kollel, who vacated independently by taxi to the hospital - where he was treated.

Following the attack, the beaten allegedly arrived at the apartment of one of the parents of one who was involved in a fight. He knocked on the door and after receiving no answer, fired at the front door and fled before police arrived.
Suspect's counsel, Attorney Shachar Hetzroni, told the court that the suspect was interrogated, cooperated fully with the investigating unit, answered all the questions asked, and provided an alibi, that he could not do what was attributed to him. "Arresting him to check the alibi is unacceptable. "

Dorit Feinstein, Supreme court, concluded that the review of the investigation shows that there is a reasonable suspicion that the respondent committed the crimes, and: shooting firearms, threats and willfully damaging property.

In light of the many essential investigation activities, the judge extended the detention of the suspect until Tuesday 19/02/13 at 14:00, in order to allow judicial review of the actions of the investigation and examination of the alibi.

His lawyer said to B'Chadrei Charedim: "the suspect has no connection to the shooting, and I hope that his case will be reviewed by the police as soon as possible, as well as his release."
