"Meshulachim" who go out to collect money overseas, often come across "sting" stories which leave them with an empty pocket.
The following story, which is exposed here for the first time, deals with a Chareidi Meshulach who left after Purim in order to collect money in London, for the sake of his critically ill father's treatment.
The Avrech went by day and night from house to house to beseech the heart and pocket of the donors.
The average daily sum which he managed to collect was 190 Pounds.
A few days after he landed in London, while he was strolling in the streets of Stamford Hill, a man with a Chassidish appearance came up to him, and presented himself as Meir L.
He inquired as to his purpose of collecting money, and offered his services as an experienced driver who works with Roshei Yeshivos and famous Rabbonim.
After hearing the details of the tragedy, he promised him: "I'll raise a big sum for you, but on condition everything will be kept secret." He reasoned his demand in that he is not interested in other work.
On the first day, the "driver" helped raise a nice sum for the Meshulach."All the money is with you"
Towards the end of the trip, the driver explained that he is interested to go in to see a certain rich person he knows personally. According to him, the condition of the donation at this person is presenting all the cash which the person has collected until now.
A few hours before his return to Israel, the Avrech counted all the money and passed the sum – which was close to 40,000 NIS – to the "driver".
After gaining the trust of the young Meshulach, he told him of an Avrech who is going in the next few days to London. "Don't worry," he promised. "I'll pass the money through him, and that way you won't have to pay the difference of transferring the money to Israel".
The driver gave the Meshulach the name of the Avrech and his phone number.
A few hours later, he phoned to ask for commission on the help with raising money. "You owe me 30% on the donations", he announced.
The Meshulach answered : "All the money is at you now".
The driver phoned him time after time, and after he gave into the pressures – the poor Meshulach managed to raise a loan of $700 which he gave the "driver".
When he got to Israel, it became clear: the "Avrech from Beitar" was found out as a collaborator with the driver, and no one answered his phone calls.
