Chabad emissary in New Rochelle Westchester in New York was stuck yesterday at a height of 10 meters during a Chanukkah candle lighting ceremony.
Last night a candle lighting ceremony and Chanukah party was sponsored by the comic and Vanity based local Jewish Center. For lighting the menorah erected at a height of 20 feet the community made available a lift truck crane from the electric company, Con Edison.
Hundreds of people came to the event, and the rabbi and power company worker entered the open elevator, normally used by the electricity workers - and went up. The Rabbi lit the menorah and the public was excited to hear the blessings and singing "Hanerot Halalu" and Maoz Tzur."
After the blessings and singing, they were preparing to go down, but the system broke down - and they remained stuck at an altitude of 20 feet in the extreme cold. Several minutes later, after attempts to repair the system failed, it was decided to invite the fire department of New Rochelle. These came with ladders, climbing to a height of 20 feet and rescued the rabbi and power company worker, to the applause of hundreds of spectators who followed the event.
