Old man refused to be hospitalized: "I must first light candles"

An 80-year old man, who suffered severe breathing difficulties, surprised paramedics last night (Motzei Shabbos), who were called to his house to take him to the hospital.
"I want to light candles before I go to the hospital," he said although he had no appearance of anything observant.
Avrumie Katz, a Hatzalah Gush Dan medic, and resident of Bnei Brak told B'Chadrei Charedim of the events:
"A little before 20:00 we got a call about an elderly person who has difficulty breathing. We went out to the scene along with another volunteer. When we got to the address, we gave the patient primary health care, with many family members who were at home.
"After an intensive care unit had arrived and began preparations for evacuation to hospital, the man turned to me and said: "Can I light the candles before the evacuation?"
"The family members explained that this is the first night of Chanukah, and are very excited that the father - grandfather of the family will light candles. Following medical consultations we helped him to say the blessings and he lit the candles with emotion. Then we sang together a few Chanukkah songs, and he was taken to hospital, with a smile on his face ..."
