Storm over closing shops on Shabbat: Following the instruction of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat to close 8 stores which are open on Shabbat in downtown Jerusalem, the secular faction 'Hitorerut' banned today (Sunday) the city administration meeting attended by Barkat.

Hitorerut Faction has also announced the holding of a secular demonstration on Thursday this week at the Safra Square in Jerusalem against the "surrender policy of Barkat to Haredim".

Meretz Jerusalem Faction Chairman Laura Wharton wrote on her Facebook page: "Barkat made a big mistake when he pounced on small businesses. The eight supermarkets scattered around the city center that he ordered to close on Shabbat serve a varied and important clientele, remote from Haredi and religious neighborhoods. You can help them."

Wharton even called on secular residents to shop in these stores.
