The Jerusalem District Court reported this morning (Monday) the sentence against former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convicted in the repeat trial in the Talansky affair - eight months' imprisonment, in addition to the punishment of 6 years imprisonment pending against him in the Holyland affair.
Olmert was convicted of fraud and offenses in the case of breach of trust by accepting hundreds of thousands of shekels illegally from American businessman, Morris Talansky. This comes, after Shula Zaken, Olmert's secretary brought to the prosecution recordings of conversations between the two men which proved that Olmert used the funds for private use and did not report on it.
It will be recalled that Olmert has a pending sentence of 6 years in prison for his conviction in the Holyland bribery trial and is appealing the verdict in this case to the Supreme Court.
Meretz MK Zahava Gal-On commented on the verdict given in the Talansky affair "There is a judge and there is a judgment, when a black flag is hanging over the head of the most senior politician who is going to jail. I applaud the judicial system who determined the sentence of former prime minister ignoring the PR people and the attorneys on his behalf who surround him for years, those of capital and government, who in the paper, as if it would make sense to separate public law and ordinary citizens. "
Gal-On added, "I am proud of the prosecution which strengthens the persistent struggle against the just and the previous verdict, erroneous and dangerous, that an elected official can pocket questionable money envelopes and get away with it."
