Arrested soldier from Bat Ayin suspected of national security risk

Elad Sela, 25, a resident of Bat Ayin, a soldier serving in the Etzion brigade, was arrested three weeks ago on suspicion of leaking information to friends at settlements on projects planned by the IDF.

Since his arrest, he was interrogated at the GSS facility, on serious suspicions of release of classified information, exceeding authority to the point of endangering national security and obstruction of justice. So too he was forbidden to meet a lawyer and his family.

Tonight (Tuesday) District Court Judge in Jerusalem Moshe Drori accepted the appeal of 'Choneinu' organization, and ordered that the soldier Elad Sela will meet with his lawyer tomorrow, after 7 days of interrogation by the GSS without meeting a lawyer.

Meanwhile, at an unusual debate that took place near to his bed in the surgery department at Beilinson Hospital, where he is recovering from urgent surgery, the military court judge extended his arrest until Sunday.

Last night he was taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, following a health emergency which was diagnosed. During the night the soldier was operated without the knowledge of his family.

"It is sad that the investigation authorities use interrogation methods and sanctions on a soldier, which are meant for the last of the terrorists," said Attorney Adi Keidar this evening, representing the soldier. "We alerted the investigating authorities on his medical condition from the start, unfortunately the Security Agency and the military did not attach enough importance to the subject - and the results are known to everyone. I am pleased that the District Court accepted our position and significantly shortened the order to meet a lawyer for my client".

"The IDF sticks a knife in the back of a devoted soldier", said members of his family tonight. "It is impossible that a good and devoted soldier, who a day before his arrest was a partner to the arrest of 17 terrorists, will find himself under delusional orders and harsh prison conditions. We are worried about his health condition which deteriorated during the interrogations – whose peak was in the urgent surgery tonight, unaccompanied by his family. A shame that he had to undergo surgery without the knowledge and support of the family."
